What is a periodontist

A periodontist is a dental specialist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive an additional three years of specialized training beyond dental school, focusing on the supporting structures of teeth such as gums, bone, and connective tissues.

Periodontists are skilled in treating all stages of gum disease, from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. They can also perform a range of treatments to repair and regenerate damaged tissues, such as gum grafting, bone grafting, and guided tissue regeneration.

In addition to treating gum disease, periodontists are also experts in dental implant placement. They have the training and expertise to perform the surgical procedures necessary to place dental implants, as well as the skills to design and create custom implant restorations.

If you have gum disease or are considering dental implants, your general dentist may refer you to a periodontist for specialized treatment. Working with a periodontist can help ensure that you receive the highest quality care for your specific needs.
